Young scientists at Wantagh Middle School explored the correlation between mass and velocity during a recent experiment. Seventh graders raced model cars down ramps to see how far they traveled with different weights.
Ashley Azzata’s and Elyse Longo’s science labs were buzzing with excitement on Sept. 29 as students worked in groups to conduct their experiments. They used cafeteria trays, propped up on one side by binders or textbooks, as ramps. A meter stick extended out from the bottom of the tray so students could see how far the cars traveled.
Ms. Longo said that the experiment was an introduction to the forces and interactions unit. It also reinforced the use of the scientific method as students had to make a hypothesis, and record and analyze their data.
