Supervisor Saladino (center) and his colleagues in government, including Town Councilman Lou Imbroto, Councilman Tom Hand, Councilman Steve Labriola, Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato and Legislator James Kennedy, recognize this year’s recipients of the 2026 Town of Oyster Bay Veterans’ Awards at a special ceremony.
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with his colleagues in government to honor veterans and veteran volunteers at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Salute to America held at John Burns Park. Recipients were recognized as Veteran Volunteer of the Year and Friend of a Veteran Volunteer.
“This year’s wonderful honorees have involved themselves in numerous veteran activities and events and perform many diverse services on behalf of America’s fighting men and women,” said Supervisor Saladino. “They are hometown heroes and role models, and are truly worthy of tonight’s honor. I look forward to their continued service in the years ahead.”
Recipients of the Town’s Veterans Volunteer of the Year Award included Robert James Ryan of Syosset and Jason Lederer of Syosset.
Robert James Ryan helps veterans who cannot perform certain tasks on their own. Through Cooking for LI Veterans, he helps veterans who can no longer cook for themselves. Through Vets out of the Rough, he helps disabled veterans learn to play golf, and through the White Cane Group, he assists blind veterans in going fishing and participating in other recreational activities. He also co-hosts Veterans News on public cable and volunteers at the VA Medical Center during their annual Day at the Races fundraiser.
Jason Lederer is an active member of the Air National Guard. He is a member of the Nassau County Police Department Veterans Organization, participating in initiatives that support fellow veteran officers and promote their military service. As a member of the NCPD Color Guard, he represents the department at veteran memorial and community events honoring living and fallen veterans. Jason is dedicated to continuing in these roles to support and honor our veterans.
The Friend of a Veteran Volunteer Award was presented to Thomas Alberda of Massapequa. Thomas assists in the Towers of Freedom, a 9-11 Military Monument located at Burns Park. He also participates in the Fields of Honor program, run by the Massapequa Kiwanis Club, and assists with placing American flags at veterans’ gravesites during Memorial Day ceremonies.
“Our veterans and veteran volunteers remind us that the men and women who have fought to defend our freedom deserve the continuing support of the entire community for their extraordinary sacrifices,” Supervisor Saladino stated.
