Town Shines Light on Recovery, Mental Health

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by members of the Islip Town Board and elected officials on the Federal, State, County and local levels for the 7th annual “Islip Goes Purple” event held Wednesday, September 3rd at Town Hall, where officials conducted a commemorative lighting of the Town Hall cupola, which will be lit purple for September in honor of recovery and mental health awareness.

“Islip Goes Purple symbolizes our continued commitment to stand together, united in memory of the lives lost, those in recovery, those struggling, and the families throughout the Town of Islip and across Long Island impacted by mental illness, struggling with mental health, and those affected by a substance use disorder,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “It does not discriminate; it can affect anyone regardless of economic or social status, Carpenter said.”

“Having elected officials from the Federal, State, and County levels joining us here today is a testament to the fact that substance use disorder, mental illness, and caring for one’s own mental health are paramount issues at the forefront of what we as elected officials must be prepared to address and tackle,” added the Supervisor.

From the community level up to the Town and State, we join together to “go purple” and stand united in this effort. You can also stand with this movement and watch the Town go purple! This month, Islip Goes Purple Flags will be displayed on Main Street and across school campuses, New York State will light landmarks purple across the state, and we’re asking our local businesses and civic and community groups to spread the word and join us in displaying purple.

The kick-off event highlighted community resources showcasing pamphlets and swag as well as crafts and sweets, all sold to show support to Islip Goes Purple. Booths from the following organizations were present at the event: Youth Enrichment Services, Great South Bay Coalition, Northwell Health South Shore University, Northwell Health South Oaks, Good Samaritan University Hospital, NYU Langone Hospital, Matters Network, Suffolk County Police Department, Christopher Coluccio Foundation, Families Anonymous, Beading Hearts, Outreach NY, Suffolk County Department of Health- Office of Minority Health, and Suffolk County Multicultural Advisory Committee (MAC)
