The Town of Babylon marked the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, with its annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony on Friday, September 11, at the Town of Babylon 9/11 Hometown Memorial on Ocean Parkway. The ceremony also included the unveiling of the Town’s new Post-9/11 Memorial honoring residents who became ill or died as a result of their service and exposure in the aftermath of the attacks.
The Town inscribed 14 names on the new memorial at its dedication. The memorial joins the Hometown Memorial, which honors Babylon residents who were killed on September 11, 2001.
The new memorial had remained covered since its installation, and the families of the 14 honorees had not seen it before the ceremony. During the program, they removed the covering, allowing the families to see their loved ones’ names together for the first time.
“September 11th did not end when that day was over,” said Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “For too many families in our community, the years that followed brought illness, loss, and a sacrifice that has gone unmarked for far too long.”
The memorial was created through the efforts of the Town Board, the Post-9/11 Memorial Committee and the Town of Babylon Chiefs Association, working alongside the families of those honored.
The ceremony was open to the public and provided residents with an opportunity to remember those lost on September 11 and those whose lives were affected in the years that followed. The Town intended the memorial to serve as a lasting place of reflection for families and the community for generations to come.
