Town Of Babylon Declares March Irish American Heritage Month

The Town of Babylon officially marked Irish American Heritage Month with a proclamation ceremony held on Wednesday, March 11, celebrating the rich cultural legacy and lasting contributions of Irish Americans to the local community and the nation.

As part of the month-long recognition, Town Hall’s iconic cupola will be illuminated in green, serving as a visible tribute to Irish heritage and pride throughout March.

Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer emphasized the importance of honoring the deep roots Irish Americans have in the community. “Irish Americans have played a vital role in shaping our town and our country,” Schaffer said. “From public service to cultural traditions, their contributions are woven into the fabric of Babylon, and this month allows us to celebrate that legacy.”

Councilman Terence McSweeney reflected on the significance of the occasion and the pride it brings to the community. “It was truly an honor to officially declare March as Irish American Heritage Month here in the Town of Babylon,” McSweeney said. “Lighting the cupola in green is a powerful symbol of recognition for the generations of Irish Americans whose values of hard work, resilience, and service continue to shape our town today.”

The ceremony was made even more meaningful by the presence of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, a group dedicated to preserving Irish culture and supporting community initiatives. AOH President Chris Bradley highlighted the organization’s mission and its connection to the celebration. “We are proud to stand with the Town of Babylon in recognizing Irish American Heritage Month,” Bradley said. “Our heritage is built on faith, family, and service, and it is inspiring to see that legacy honored in such a meaningful way.”

Speakers also reflected on the historic role Irish Americans have played in public safety, particularly in New York City. As noted during the ceremony, “The history of the FDNY and NYPD is, in many ways, the history of the Irish in New York—built on courage, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to serve.”

The Town’s proclamation and month-long tribute underscore a continued commitment to honoring the traditions, achievements, and enduring spirit of Irish Americans in Babylon and beyond.
