The Sachem Central Teachers’ Association distributed 25,000 free books to members of the Sachem community during its Reading Opens the World Literacy and Book Fair on May 12. Hundreds of families and educators lined up outside of Sachem High School North to collect books for Sachem students of all ages. Teachers were invited to take up to 30 free books to restock their classroom libraries, whereas students chose five books to bring home. The books were received through a grant from the American Federation of Teachers, in conjunction with First Book and New York State United Teachers.

Leading up to the event, Sachem students and staff members spent hours after school organizing the thousands of books by genre and reading level.

In addition to the book giveaway, the event included free ice cream for kids, carnival games and activities, music and local food trucks. The SCTA collected clothing donations for local charities and nonperishable food donations for the Sachem North food pantry. The event fostered a love for reading while bringing the entire Sachem community together.
