The Syosset High School Science Olympiad Team took home First Place at the New York State competition last week. This is the first time in the High School’s history the team has ever placed first at the state level. The win earned them a spot at the National competition in Wichita, Kansas this coming May.

Earlier this year, 450 teams from around the state competed in regional competitions with only the top 60 advancing to the state level. Having placed within the top 60, Syosset traveled to Le Moyne College on March 17th in Syracuse for the state competition where they completed 23 science-related events that ranged from building devices to conducting lab experiments. Only the top two finishers moved on to the National contest.

The last time Syosset’s team qualified for Nationals was in 1986 with a second-place win. The team’s score was also recorded as the second best score in the 37 years of the New York State competition.
