Becker’s Hospital Review has named Northwell Health’s Sven Gierlinger to its 2023 list of 50-plus Hospital and Healthcare System Chief Experience Officers (CXO) to know.
As a senior vice president and the Chief Experience Officer for Northwell Health, Mr. Gierlinger has built an engaging, innovative and collaborative culture that drives organizational growth and patient loyalty through the patient experience. He is responsible for ensuring that each patient’s journey is smooth and comfortable from start to finish.
Mr. Gierlinger has spearheaded Northwell’s successful food transformation by re-imagining how hospital food is prepared and presented to patients. In 2017, Mr. Gierlinger brought in Michelin-starred Chef Bruno Tison to help overhaul the way Northwell Health hospital kitchens were being run. The idea of food as health became the focus along with serving nutritious and delicious meals to patients and visitors across the health system, New York State’s largest with 21 hospitals. As a result, Northwell hospitals are on average currently at the 84th percentile (national rankings) for food scores rated by patients, with many hospitals earning scores in the 90th percentile.
“Sven Gierlinger truly understands that the patient experience begins with listening to what patients have to say,” said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell Health. “By doing that he has come up with innovative initiatives like the transformation of Northwell’s food services, working with researchers to improve inpatient sleep and implementing a communication course that teaches providers how to build trust with their patients. The patient experience at Northwell’s facilities are incredibly important to us and an integral component of the quality of healthcare we deliver each and every day.”
The leaders included on Becker’s list are first and foremost advocates for respectful care delivery, acting as champions of equitable care and cultural transformation for their hospitals and health systems. The list honors CXOs for their diligence in creating safe, fair and well-ordered care experiences for patients.

Mr. Gierlinger began his career in the luxury hotel business, holding a series of leadership positions with the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company. He played a key role in the openings of several Ritz-Carlton hotels in Germany, Japan, Indonesia and the United States. He came to Northwell Health from the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit where he served as vice president of hospitality and service culture and was responsible for creating a superior and consistent service experience for patients, visitors and employees.
