Bonnie Rosen, a resident of Melville who generously volunteers her time for animal rescue and advocacy, has been selected by Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) as the District 17 Woman of Distinction for 2023. Legislator Donnelly honored Ms. Rosen by presenting her with a special proclamation during a Suffolk County Women of Distinction luncheon held in conjunction with Women’s History Month at the Evans K. Griffing Building in Riverhead on March 7.

A life-long resident of Huntington who grew up in a household full of love for animals with a mother who rescued many herself, Ms. Rosen saw firsthand the need and opportunity to advocate and help unwanted, abandoned and abused pets. Today, she is the go-to person for all things animal welfare and rescue throughout Suffolk County and beyond. Finding loving homes for dogs, cats and other animals that are no longer wanted is her passion. Acting solely as a volunteer, Ms. Rosen posts on social media and works with animal non-profit rescue agencies to achieve her goal of making sure that every animal finds its forever home. She receives a large amount of calls, texts and direct messages every week asking for help. In addition, Ms. Rosen assists with animals that are missing, using her large network of contacts to ensure happy endings for families who have lost their beloved pets.

One of the non-profit rescue agencies Ms. Rosen works with is Jake’s Rescue Ranch (jakesrescueranch.org) who recognized her as the honoree of their inaugural Fundraiser Gala in 2019.

A former director of business development focusing on senior citizens for a home care agency, Ms. Rosen also assists seniors in the community.

“Ms. Rosen demonstrates incredible passion and determination in helping our innocent and vulnerable animals,” said Legislator Donnelly. “It is a privilege to honor her as my Woman of Distinction for 2023. On behalf of the entire community, those of us on two legs as well as those on four, I thank her for all that she does.”

The Suffolk County Woman of Distinction Recognition Program was established in 2002 to give each County Legislator the opportunity to honor an outstanding woman who resides in his or her legislative district and has demonstrated leadership, involvement and commitment to community.  In conjunction with Women’s History Month, Ms. Rosen and the names of the other legislative district honorees were read into the record at the March 7 Legislative General Meeting. Legislator Donnelly’s previous winners include Valerie St. Bernard of Deer Park (2022), Lisa Karrer and Deborah Porretto of South Huntington (2021) and June Hunt Margolin of Huntington Station (2020).
