In continuation with Police Appreciation week in the Suffolk County Police Department, Accompsett Middle School sixth graders were visited by a special four-legged friend on May 18.
Gunnar, who works for the SCPD K-9 unit, along with officer Ryan Neems, stopped by to educate the students on life as a police dog.
Officer Neems gave the students a synopsis of the training and patrol work Gunnar does. The six-year-old German shepherd, is a bomb dog who is trained to smell special compounds in bombs. He also helps find missing people, weapons and stolen merchandise.
