On Feb. 1, The Stony Brook School Ethics Bowl Team won the Long Island High School Ethics Bowl for the third year in a row. This event takes place at Hofstra University annually and challenges students to discuss, and break down, current ethical and real-life issues.
This year, students had to address hotly contested topics such as whether families should be allowed to involuntarily commit their drug-addicted loved ones or not. “Remaining unified is especially difficult in the Ethics Bowl,” said team advisor and Academic Dean Dr. Sean Riley, “because it’s a competition designed to force people with different convictions to discuss hotly contested moral and political issues. Even within our teams, viewpoints can vastly differ; but students had to learn how to humble themselves, hear each other out, and forge a pathway forward together.”
Both Stony Brook teams went undefeated that day, finishing first and second in the opening rounds and qualifying for the semifinals—setting up an unprecedented sweep of the event by a single school. The team will be heading to the National High School Ethics Bowl competition in April.
