Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District held its first of two evening literacy nights for students and parents on Feb. 15. This year’s theme was STEM and Literacy. Students in kindergarten through second grade were invited to participate in their classrooms.
To begin the evening, teachers read “After the Fall,” a story about Humpty Dumpty and how he created a plane. After discussing the book, students had the opportunity to design their own paper plane. The planes were attached to straws and launched in the air, challenging students to see whose plane could travel the furthest. At the end of the event, students were gifted a STEM-related book and an additional plane to fly at home. The literacy night for students in grades three through five will take place in mid-March.
