South Shore University Hospital (SSUH) has earned three prestigious designations from the Joint Commission, a nonprofit health care quality accreditation organization. The certifications are a symbol of world-class, consistent patient care and comprehensive excellence, and recognizes compliance with The Joint Commission’s strict national standards.
The hospital has been certified for hip fracture, recertified for advanced hip and knee replacement, and went from basic certification to advanced certification for spine surgery. SSUH also is the first hospital in Suffolk County to earn both advanced spine and disease-specific hip fracture certifications.
“Since our Joint Commission journey began several years ago, the Departments of Neurosurgery and Orthopedics have continued our collaborative approach to delivering high-quality, outcomes-based care,” said Justin Thomas, MD, vice chairman, department of neurosurgery at SSUH. “We are proud to achieve all of the certifications and consider our facility to be a premier destination hospital as we continue to provide the most sophisticated patient-focused treatment options to Suffolk County residents.”
All the certifications have the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval. The Joint Commission’s standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. They are informed by scientific literature and expert consensus to help health care organizations measure, assess, and improve performance. The surveyors also conducted onsite observations and interviews.
