On Saturday morning, December 6, 2025, upwards of a thousand runners, walkers, and baby stroller pushers will be traversing the roads of Seaford! They will each be participating in Seaford’s famous Hot Chocolate 5K Run/Walk, which this year marks its 20th anniversary! The community event will start that day at 9:00 AM. The race will be conducted with the starting and finishing line in front of Seaford High School at 1575 Seamans Neck Road, Seaford.
Complete information about participating in the Run/Walk can be obtained directly from the Seaford Wellness Council website (www.seafordwellness.com). All participants receive a high-quality T-shirt with a uniquely designed event logo. Hot chocolate and bagels are served afterwards, and an awards ceremony and extensive raffle are held post-race.
Mike DiSilvio, Council President, stated, “This event is a wonderful way to start the holiday season in Seaford. Every year, I see nothing but smiling and happy faces from the folks who participate in the Run/Walk.”
The two Honorary Co-Starters were chosen, as is tradition, from both the general community and from the Seaford Chamber of Commerce’s designated Businesspeople of the Year. John Scaparro is this year’s community representative. Scaparro is a retired NYPD Detective Sergeant. Scaparro is the President of the Board of Trustees of the Seaford Public Library and the President of the Board of Trustees of the Nassau Library System. Scaparro is also active with the Seaford Knights of Columbus Memorare Council and is a Past Grand Knight, former Financial Secretary, and served on the Board of Directors of the Memorare Caterers. Margaret Grub was recently honored jointly by the Seaford Chamber of Commerce and the Nassau County Chambers of Commerce as the Seaford Businessperson of the Year. She currently serves as the President of the Seaford Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Seaford Public Library Board of Directors, holding the position of Secretary. Grub is a real estate salesperson for Century 21 AA after having retired as an Assistant Principal from the New York City Board of Education. Ken Nersesian, Council Vice President, commented that “The Council is extremely proud to name John Scaparro and Margaret Grub as 2025 Honorary Co-Starters. They are both perfect examples of the caring community spirit of Seaford.”
Proceeds from this year’s event have been designated to support the Seaford Public Library’s Summer 2026 Children’s Reading Program. The Council is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and those individuals who may wish to donate to the Run/Walk can do so very conveniently through the Council’s website. Council Treasurer Donna de la Bastide states, “The Run/Walk is the Council’s sole fundraiser. The varied projects that the Council is annually involved with benefit Seaford’s school children, our senior population, and the public library. In addition, we organize general wellness programs and conduct beautification efforts throughout the hamlet.”
The Seaford Hot Chocolate 5K Run/Walk has been recognized in running circles as the third largest community-based 5K run/walk on Long Island. It is anticipated that this year’s event will surpass the fun-filled experiences of previous years.
