Although teaching and learning is taking place from home, everyone remains full of spirit in the North Bellmore School District. Weekly spirit activities give students, teachers and administrators a chance to connect digitally and share a common experience.
For the first spirit activity in March, children were asked to hang a picture of their school mascot in their front window, which they could either print out or draw. Students could then go around the neighborhood to get some exercise, while practicing social distancing, to see how many pictures they could find.
The last week of March featured the first Virtual Spirit Day as students and staff were encouraged to submit pictures of themselves in their school gear, which were then shared on each school’s Twitter account. April 8 was Wild Wednesday when everyone could send in a selfie with a favorite stuffed animal.
Principals also generated excitement for literacy by recording Flipgrid videos of themselves reading, which students and families could watch on their devices at home.
