Yesterday, Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1) joined more than 30 House Republicans in support of an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court, defending the right to concealed carry under the Second Amendment to the Constitution in the case New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Corlett. The brief was led by Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (R, NY-22) and signed by 175 members of the House of Representatives.
In this case, which the Supreme Court has agreed to hear, New Yorkers assert they were wrongly denied a concealed carry permit for personal protection by state officials. New York State’s concealed carry restrictions, among the strictest in the nation, prohibit law-abiding New Yorkers from exercising their Second Amendment rights without demonstrating vaguely defined “proper cause”. The case will be heard in the fall 2021 term.
“The Second Amendment and the right to self defense are not reserved for only the elite few deemed worthy by government officials. To address rising crime, we need to support law enforcement more, not less, reverse cashless bail, keep qualified immunity, and enact a Law Enforcement Bill of Rights. Unilaterally imposing more restrictions on law-abiding citizens’ ability to defend themselves is not the answer,” said Congressman Zeldin.
