It wasn’t the Indy500, but the third graders at Tooker Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon School District were geared up for race day with their spool car racers on Jan. 26 in the school’s cafeteria.
After studying about different types of energy, the students created race cars made with spools, rubber bands and a pencil. After turning the spool 10 times, they went head-to-head against their classmates as they launched the racers. Students measured the time and distance and then calculated the speed of their raced based on those numbers. After the first round of races and calculations were complete, the students raced again but turned their spool racers 20 times to measure the difference energy output.
