R.C. Murphy Junior High School in the Three Village Central School District has kicked off a schoolwide fundraising initiative to support access to clean drinking water in South Sudan. The fundraiser is based on the book, “A Long Walk to Water,” which is part of the seventh grade English curriculum.
The novel highlights the true story of Salva Dut, a young boy forced to flee his village in South Sudan due to civil unrest. He now works to give back to his homeland through his nonprofit, Water for South Sudan. Throughout the book, the term “Iron Giraffe” is used to refer to the drill that is used to dig wells.
In an effort to support Salva’s organization, R.C. Murphy Junior High School has enrolled in the Iron Giraffe Challenge. The building’s goal is to raise $1,000 by May 1 to build one well in South Sudan with the school’s name on it. Additionally, the school with the most donations will receive a visit from Salva himself.
