From Sept. 19-23, West Islip School District’s two middle schools – Udall Road and Beach Street – celebrated “Start with Hello Week.” Start with Hello is part of the Sandy Hook Promise, which develops programs to help students feel connected and safe in the school setting. There were daily themes at each of the schools to promote togetherness, inclusiveness and promote a positive culture in the buildings.

For example, students participated in a scavenger hunt during their lunch periods.  Students were given a scavenger hunt sheet and walked around to meet new people with similar likes and interests. Another day, random acts of kindness were written and displayed around the cafeteria. Students were encouraged to act out various random acts of kindness and spread kindness to others.

On Sept. 21, faculty, staff and students were encouraged to wear green or yellow, the colors of Start with Hello, and to show school and community unity. Students were challenged to reach out and say hello to five new people. To close out the week, faculty, staff and students showed their school pride and wore blue and gold.
