On Jan. 23, one lucky Cherokee Street Elementary School student was chosen for the unique opportunity of acting as Principal for the Day.
Each week, Cherokee Street recognizes their “Cherokee Champions,” or students seen doing good inside their school. Fourth grader Ava McIntyre was honored as a Cherokee Champion earlier this year. To be eligible to act as principal for the day, all of this school year’s Cherokee Champion’s names were entered into a pool and Ava’s was chosen for the honor.
Ava prepared for the day’s events by meeting with Principal Jill Lahey and Assistant Principal Michael Renda. She then welcomed students during their arrival and conducted the morning announcements.
Later that morning, a special assembly, featuring the Harlem Wizards basketball stars took place, and Ava delivered a spirited introduction. She then circulated the building and visited classrooms before stopping into the kindergarten music and physical education classes.
Ava also attended a pre-observation meeting, was filmed as part of the principal’s monthly video announcement and oversaw dismissal. “I observed how responsible you have to be and how much walking you do!” said Ava. “I liked visiting with the kindergartners because I felt like I could be a positive influence for them.”
