Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District recently hosted its annual Fourth Grade Parent Band Night. Coordinated by elementary school Band Director Courtney Kassinger, it proved to be an evening to remember.

With Superintendent Dr. Rory Manning present, TJL Principal Mary Williams and K-12 Music Department Coordinator Dan Bilawsky helped kick off the event. Then Kassinger spoke about the outstanding work that fourth-grade band members have been doing, invited high school musicians up to speak, shared a video featuring her budding student-musicians and, at various points throughout the evening, provided information to help guide them down a path of continued success.

The second portion of the event involved high school Tri-M Music Honor Society students teaching parents how to play their children’s instruments. The program ended with parents performing a mini concert for their children.

“This is a wonderful event that helps create familial bonds through music,” Kassinger said. “In learning the basics to play their child’s instrument, parents grow to understand the challenges involved in developing as a musician, and by hearing and seeing a performance like this, students learn to appreciate the lengths that their parents will go to in order to support and encourage them in their musical pursuits.”
