The Massapequa School District announces the appointment of Dr. Brian Trapani as the new assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, effective July 1. Dr. Trapani replaces Dr. Thomas Fasano, who is retiring.
For the past eight years, he has served as Massapequa’s curriculum associate for social studies. He has worked with educators at the elementary, middle and high school levels to implement and strengthen a social studies curriculum that fosters historical knowledge and civic participation. Dr. Trapani also serves as the district’s Advanced Placement Capstone coordinator. The two-part program includes the research-intensive AP Seminar and AP Research courses at Massapequa High School, with the Seminar course co-taught by an English and a social studies teacher.
Under his leadership, the 12th grade AP social studies curriculum was redesigned to enable student choice, with AP Microeconomics and AP Comparative Government courses introduced. An AP Human Geography course was added for ninth graders at the Ames Campus. A variety of clubs supporting history, civics, law and community outreach were developed and enhanced across the middle school and high schools. Dr. Trapani has also encouraged student participation in various history, law and public speaking contests.
Before coming to Massapequa, Dr. Trapani worked in the Commack School District for 14 years as a middle school history teacher and later as the district coordinator of social studies. He holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Hofstra University, a master’s degree in liberal studies from Stony Brook University, a master’s degree in school administration from Touro College and doctorate in educational administration from St. John’s University.
Dr. Trapani has also served as a college professor for Molloy University’s summer institute. He has been published in the Journal of Instruction Pedagogies and the SCOPE Journal for Leadership and Instruction, and has been a presenter as numerous educational conferences.
“I’m excited to stay in Massapequa and continuing to work with administrators, teachers, support staff and the community to provide strong academic opportunities to our students,” Dr. Trapani said. “I look forward to partnering with curriculum and building leaders across the district so we can support and challenge students, and help them find and develop their passions.”
He added, “I am thankful to Superintendent Dr. William Brennan and the board of education for having the confidence in me to take on this greater role and serve students and educators across all subject areas.”
Dr. Brennan said that Dr. Trapani was chosen following a thorough and rigorous interview process, and he stood out among a pool of strong candidates.
“It was clear that the ideal candidate was already among our dedicated leadership team,” Dr. Brennan said. “Dr. Trapani has a strong and clear vision for education. He aims to educate all students to their highest academic potential and teach them the skills and knowledge needed to thrive. He has proven to be a highly collaborative leader who works closely with teachers and administrators.”
