Slimy creatures were the main attraction at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on April 9, as first graders experienced the Touch Tank classroom program.

The school welcomed naturalists from The WaterFront Center in Oyster Bay, and each class had a session with the live marine animals. Students were introduced to exoskeleton creatures, such as European green crabs and spider crabs, bivalves like clams and oysters, and univalves like snails. In total, they got to meet seven different species.

Students were able to hold a few of the marine species.

Students were allowed to hold some of the marine animals, while others they could touch while safely held by the trained naturalists. The Touch Tank experience connected to their science unit on animal adaptations and habitats, and was sponsored by the PTA’s Arts in Education committee.
