Nassau County Legislators Siela A. Bynoe (D – Westbury) and Laura Schaefer (R – Westbury) joined with the Westbury Fire Department and their colleagues in government on Sunday, Oct. 30 to ceremonially rename Maple Avenue between Linden and Post Avenues “Firefighters Way.”

During a ceremony coinciding with the observance of October as National Fire Prevention Month, Maple Avenue outside the firehouse was renamed to honor the Westbury firefighters who were injured, sustained illnesses, or lost their lives during their volunteer service. In addition, Firefighters Way is a tribute to the generations of volunteers who have stepped up to serve and protect the residents of Westbury for more than 125 years.

Legislator Bynoe was the lead sponsor on the road renaming resolution, which was unanimously approved by the Nassau County Legislature in September. During the dedication ceremony, Legislator Bynoe lauded the Department’s service during major regional incidents such as the fatal February 2019 train derailment and the May 2021 fire at Jamaica Ash. She also recalled the Department’s swift response when her home was struck by lightning in years past.

“As we gather to enshrine the Westbury Fire Department’s service and sacrifice into the fabric of our community, my heart is full of gratitude,” Legislator Bynoe said. “You are always in my heart and prayers, and I pray for your safety every time I hear that alarm go off. May God continue to bless and keep you, and please remain safe as you continue to serve our community.”
