Legislator Leslie Kennedy Honors Local Samoset 6th Grader With Youth Award

On Monday, May 12th, Suffolk County held their fifth annual Suffolk County Youth Awards at the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge. The event, which was organized by the offices of Suffolk County Legislator Jason Richberg and Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine, served the purpose of honoring young people from across the county who have faced and overcome adversity.

Each legislative district honored a youth, with Legislator Leslie Kennedy’s honoree being local 6th grader Tyler Lerman. Tyler, who attends Samoset Middle School, is an avid volunteer with his school’s Canine Companion Service Club, a club dedicated to training and grooming future service dogs. He is often early to school and late to leave making sure that he has donated as much time to the Canine Companion club as possible.

The service dog that Tyler spends most of his time with is named Doris V (Pronounced Dor-ey,) and together they attend fundraising and social events like Dog Fest, Bingo, and CommUNITY Day. He regularly gives up his lunch period to help Doris V comfort students with special needs. At the age of 11, he has already dedicated well over two hundred hours of community service.

“You can tell when a kid has a good heart, and Tyler has a good heart. To see that much time dedicated to community service at that young of an age is inspiring. Tyler has an incredibly bright future ahead of him,” said Legislator Kennedy.

Tyler was able to bring Doris V to the Youth awards at the Dennison Building, and she quickly became one of the highlights of the ceremony. The office of Legislator Leslie Kennedy would like to extend further gratitude to Tyler Lerman, Samoset Middle School, Canine Companions and all those who attended and helped make this possible.
