Labor Day, Monday, September 7, offers one last long weekend for barbecues, pool parties, and outdoor fun. While summer officially continues through September 22, the holiday is considered the unofficial end of summer. Keep these safety tips in mind:
Leave fireworks to professionals. Sparklers can reach temperatures of about 2,000 F and should not be handled by children.
Don’t drink and drive. Arrange for a designated driver, taxi, or rideshare if consuming alcohol or using marijuana.
Practice water safety. Closely supervise children around pools and other bodies of water, and swim only where lifeguards are present.
Use sunscreen. Protect your skin from harmful UV rays and reapply sunscreen after swimming or sweating.
Prevent food poisoning. Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold, and use a meat thermometer to ensure food reaches a safe temperature.
Protect pets. Keep pets secure around crowds and loud noises, and make sure they have identification or a microchip in case they escape.
