Kennedy’s Cougar Crier Named Best High School Newspaper

At the June 2 Press Club of Long Island’s Media Awards dinner, Bellmore-Merrick’s John F. Kennedy’s Cougar Crier was named Best High School Newspaper.

“Being recognized along with some of the best journalists is something to be proud of,” Sam Luckman, the paper’s editor-in-chief, said. “This wouldn’t have been possible without all the hard work put in by the advisers, editors and staff.”

In addition, students Jess Mehr and Nikita Rodov won third place in the Editorial/Commentary category (Student Division) for Mehr’s opinion piece, “The Case for a Virtual Option,” in which Rodov edited. The winning piece can be viewed at: https://issuu.com/jfkcougarcrier/docs/apznzaye7cqhyifubmklunnyf_mxy3zpeawacd8-djlemmtxel/4

Dr. Dennis Urban and Brad Seidman serve as co-faculty advisers for The Cougar Crier.

“Mr. Seidman and I are fortunate to have a dedicated staff of editors, writers and photographers at The Cougar Crier,” said Dr. Urban. “We are so proud of their accomplishments in transforming the Crier into an award-winning newspaper. Their hard work has helped the newspaper become a true reflection of Kennedy High School’s excellence.”
