Thirty-seven Islip High School peer mentors recently participated in the Buccaneer University program’s first field trip, visiting Adventure Park in Wheatley Heights for an exciting team-building experience.
“As an adviser of the program, I ask our peer mentors to push eighth and ninth graders out of their comfort zones, try new things, make connections and reach out for support when needed,” school counselor Nicole Hall said. “Throughout the Adventure Park experience, I asked the peer mentors to do the same. I witnessed groups of students all supporting each other throughout the park and giving tips to those who felt nervous or stuck. They stepped out of their comfort zones, led by example and made sure all of their peers were able to navigate the difficult parts of the course. I was so impressed by their bravery and compassion. They even cheered on chaperones who were out of their own comfort zones. They should all be extremely proud of themselves. It was a wonderful experience and a chance to form a tighter bond as a group.”
