Smiles were on the faces of all present as Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new little free library at Coral Park in Greenlawn.

The library idea was developed by the school’s second graders. As the project snowballed, other groups got involved. The Town of Huntington provided the location at Coral Park, Boy Scout Troop 12 in Huntington offered to help put the library together, Harborfields High School students volunteered to restock the library and place flyers in local mailboxes, and the Harborfields Public Library set up a bookstore for the second graders to shop for books to fill the library.

Before the ribbon was cut and books placed inside the library, Principal Kathryn McNally took the mic to thank the students, classroom teachers, staff, parents and PTA.

“I know the expression ‘it takes a village,’ and it certainly does because this became a community project,” McNally said. “When I look at everyone here today, everybody played a role in making this happen. Because of all the work this little village did, we have students right here who live in Greenlawn and the Harborfields community who can come here, open up doors and take a book home with them.”

“There’s something special that happens when great students, teachers and administrators connect with wonderful parents and community organizations like the Scout groups and their town government to make something magical happen,” said Huntington Town Councilman Dave Bennardo, who did the ribbon cutting honors. “I want to thank you for caring enough to make this happen.”
