A group of 50 Harborfields High School marine science students recently took a seal watching field trip to Cupsogue Beach County Park in Westhampton Beach. After observing seals on the Moriches Bay side of the barrier island, the students and science teacher Francis Rossi walked across to the ocean side and observed waves and surfers.

“Our students were extremely excited to be able to see what appeared to be harbor seals in the water,” Rossi said. “Barges were being moved through the area for what appeared to be some type of dredging activity. Regardless, we did see some seals swimming right in front of us, and the few that we saw seemed to be very curious and appeared to be watching us as much as we were watching them. This was the first year I have run this particular field trip, and all in all, we had a great day.”
