The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County donated Christmas trees decorated by local Girl Scout troops to local charities and service organizations here today, to bring some holiday spirit to people who may be homeless, hungry or battling personal struggles on Long Island.
The annual “Hall of Trees” event culminated with local charities selecting and picking up the more than three dozen trees – all decorated by Girl Scouts in Suffolk County on Long Island – and bringing them to locations where they can be the centerpiece for a holiday celebration.
The trees were decorated in themes including honoring military members, love of pets and even some with warm gloves and socks, are meant to bring joy to Long Islanders who utilize critical non-profit services.
“The girls do a fantastic job every year,” said Jonathan Cruz, Community Housing Innovations, which operates homeless shelters across the region and was picking up several trees. “We tie up the trees and ship them off to the shelters to make sure the clients have the festivities for the holiday. It’s bringing the spirit of the holiday to people who need it.”
Suffolk County service organizations and non-profits that picked up trees included Long Island Lending a Helping Hand, Family Service League, Shepard’s Gate, Little Flower, Pathways to Recovery Family Shelter and others.
