Connetquot High School freshmen attended the annual 24-hour, overnight Freshman Awareness workshop prior to the Thanksgiving break. The intense weekend activity, which included administration, faculty and student volunteers, was an opportunity to build relationships, enhance listening and communication skills and develop a better sense of self and of peers.
Freshman Awareness is run by the Connetquot Civic, a community-oriented club that believes in civic duty and giving back to the community. Participants of Freshman Awareness were, in essence, being prepared for the responsibilities of membership in the organization. The weekend was funded by the board of education and the PTA and included speakers Ed Garrity, Dr. Paul Wichansky and Harriet Turk who spoke to the students about growth mindset, leadership, attitude and more.
In addition to speakers, freshmen participated in “family group” activities, self-awareness activities, in which they collectively spoke about influencing values, anxiety-provoking issues, and people who have influenced them. The favorite activity of the evening, however, was a “fuzzy” activity where students tied a piece of yarn to a peer’s ”fuzzy,” a ball of yarn on a string, and thanked them for their actions and friendship. During the evening, there were also sports activities, a dance and a bedtime story from Principal Michael Moran.
