Free Breast Cancer Screenings in North Babylon

One out of every eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer in her lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society.  However, early detection significantly increases the chances of successful treatment and survival.

To help improve access to screenings, New York State Sen. Monica R. Martinez is partnering with Stony Brook Medicine to bring its Mobile Mammography Van to the North Babylon Fire Department, located at 20 Hale Road, on Friday, Aug. 8, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Screenings are free, but appointments are required.  Those interested should call (631) 638-4135 to schedule a time to be seen.

You must be 40 or older to be eligible, although some high-risk individuals under 40 may also qualify. Those younger than 40 should call the number above to determine eligibility.

“A breast cancer diagnosis is frightening, but very survivable if caught early,” said Sen. Martinez. “Partnering with Stony Brook Medicine to bring the Mobile Mammography Van into our community will improve health outcomes and save lives. If you are over 40, or have a higher risk of developing breast cancer, I urge you to make an appointment.”

This is the second time this summer the Mobile Mammography Van is visiting the Fourth Senate District. In July, Sen. Martinez hosted a screening event at the Brentwood Fire Department.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nationwide more than 279,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022, the most recent year for which data is available.  From 2018 to 2022, the New York State Department of Health reported an average of 135.5 cases of female breast cancer per 100,000 residents.  The Mobile Mammography Van and similar events bring vital screening services directly to the community and help more residents take steps to protect their health.
