The Wyandanch Union Free School district has partnered with SCOPE Education Services to provide free before-school child care and academic enrichment to scholars in grades Pre-K-5. The program, which began on the first day of school, takes place five days a week at La Francis Hardiman Elementary School and offers a variety of engaging enrichment activities that focus on fine arts, coding and robotics, sports, fitness and mindfulness. In addition, scholars also have daily instruction in literacy and mathematics as well as opportunities to participate in STEM instruction.

Third grade scholars created bridges during a STEM activity based on the book “Barnum and his 21 Elephants” during the district’s SCOPE before school enrichment program.

“The district is excited to be able to provide a free before school enrichment program to our scholars,” said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Gina Talbert. “Working with SCOPE will help support our district’s initiative to offer a well-rounded, challenging curriculum that educates the whole child and ensures every scholar develops a love of learning in a safe and supportive environment.”

Courses are taught by Wyandanch educators and supported by Wyandanch staff who work hands-on with scholars to ensure learning reinforces skills developed in previous years, while also supporting new development cognitively and socially which helps develop a learning mindset.

Using toothpicks, gum drops and marshmallows, fourth grade scholars in the SCOPE before school enrichment program were challenged with creating a tower that used all the provided resources and would stay upright.

“As our district strives to bring more opportunities to our scholars, the SCOPE before school enrichment program offers a safe and structured space where they can receive beneficial engagement,” said Assistant to the Superintendent for Curriculum, Ms. Shamika Simpson. “The partnership between SCOPE, Wyandanch and our scholars’ families will help increase student achievement and build upon the great achievements that can already be seen.”
