Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields Central School District students Amalia Sepulveda Aponte, Victoria Galeas, Erin Newman, Payten Perry and Raphael St. Vil recently traveled to Brentwood High School to take part in the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association’s Day of Recorder, also known as the Eugene Reichenthal Recorder Festival. Working with their music teacher, Laura Mara, these third- and fourth-grade students spent the day learning from guest director Christina Schaefer, witnessing a professional recorder ensemble in action, taking a break to enjoy an onsite magic show and ending the event by performing in a concert (on pieces like “Cha-Cha Chihuahua,” “JitterBAG” and “Big Round BAG”).
“Recorder playing, for its own intrinsic value, as a means of learning to read and process music, and as a gateway wind instrument for those who are nearing potential entrance to the band program, is an important part of a well-rounded music education,” K-12 Music Department Coordinator Dan Bilawsky said. “I’m so pleased that our students at TJL learn recorder in their classroom, and that a handful of them had the opportunity to take part in this wonderful event with Ms. Mara and other aspiring musicians and fine educators from across the county.”
