East Islip Captures League Wrestling Title And Crowns Three Champions

East Islip High School’s wrestling team captured the League V championship tournament title at home on Feb. 3 for the third time in the past three years and the 11th time in its program’s rich history, placing first overall as a team with 229 total points. The Redmen had 13 overall place winners who earned All-League honors and qualified for the Suffolk County tournament, to be held at Stony Brook University on Feb. 10 and 11.

East Islip’s three league champions were freshman Gryffin Alfalla (20-3) at 131 pounds, senior Anthony Avitabile (39-1) at 145 pounds and senior Nick Groneman (39-2) at 190 pounds. League finalists included sophomore Rocco DeStefano (34-3) at 101 pounds, senior Justin Mazzuco (15-5) at 124 pounds, senior Dylan Aristides (19-4) at 131 pounds, Christopher Coleman (31-8) at 170 pounds and junior Chase Canfora (18-9) at 215 pounds. Third place winners for the Redmen were junior Anthony Leidtke-Merida at 116 pounds, senior Sean O’Shea at 138 pounds, sophomore Matt D’Amico at 170 pounds and sophomore Christian Horeis at 190 pounds, while senior Brian Csoban placed fourth at 285 pounds.

“It was a great team effort to capture the league title,” coach Michael Longobardi said. “I’m excited for the boys and look forward to the county tournament next weekend.”
