In a celebration of generosity and community spirit, Deer Park High School’s Spanish Department shone brightly this Cinco de Mayo by organizing a food drive to support Lighthouse Mission, a local nonprofit dedicated to aiding the hungry and homeless.

Spearheaded by teacher Heather Nola, the initiative blossomed into a resounding success, with the unwavering support of the entire department. Together, they rallied the school’s Spanish students and collected an astounding 500 items to lend a helping hand to their neighbors in need across Long Island. Along with Nola, teachers Nicole Bjarnason, Alex Lima, Celeste Lippman, Otilia Mendiolaza and Alfonsina Sguera worked alongside their classes during the month of April to discuss the importance of helping community.

Reflecting on the collective efforts, Nola said, “We are muy orgullosa of our estudiantes!”
