College Celebrates More Than 3,000 In Class Of ’22 At Two Ceremonies On May 19

Suffolk County Community College will celebrate its Class of 2022 – more than 3,000 graduates in all — at two May 19 ceremonies, the first such gatherings since the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancelation of the 2020 and 2021 in-person celebrations.

Students will gather in the Suffolk Federal Credit Union Arena on the College’s Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood with friends and family watching as the graduates are honored by the College community.

“We recognize the incredible circumstances and obstacles members of the Class of 2022 have overcome” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Edward Bonahue, preparing for his first graduation at Suffolk. “The Class of 2022 has persevered, pushed through, and succeeded despite the challenges and uncertainty faced during the course of their studies. On May 19 we will proudly celebrate our students’ success!”

ABOUT COMMENCEMENT

Commencement ceremonies are scheduled for 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., Thursday, May 19, in theSuffolk Federal Credit Union Arena on the College’s Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood.

Suffolk County Community College Graduation by the Numbers

January 2022 graduates – 971 (913 associates degrees, 50 one-year certificates)
May 2022 graduates  – 2,014 (1,937 associates degrees, 77 one-year certificates)
August 2022 graduates (applied to graduate) – 237 (237 associates degrees)
Class of 2022 Total: 3,222

600 graduates are expected to walk at each of the two ceremonies.

Graduate totals will continue to increase up to May 19. January and August graduates are eligible to participate in the May 19 ceremony.

9 a.m. Ceremony Student Speakers

Jasmin Martins Abade (Ammerman Campus)

Jasmin is a Business Administration major from Sayville, has a 4.0 GPA and earned Dean’s List recognition for the last three semesters. Jasmin served as Vice President of Public Relations for Phi Theta Kappa and is a Get There from Here Scholar. She plans to transfer to St John’s University to study International Business, and ultimately earn a Master’s degree in Foreign Language.

Sabrina Arocho (Eastern Campus)

Sabrina is a Liberal Arts major from Shirley and has a 3.9 GPA.  Sabrina earned Dean’s List recognition for the last two semesters and served as President of the Honors Club, Senator of the Student Government Association and a member of PTK’s Alpha Eta Psi Chapter. Her goal is to transfer to John Jay College and major in the Social Sciences, and said she wants to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Erick R. Saldivar (Michael J. Grant Campus)

Erick is a January 2022 graduate with a cumulative GPA of 3.4 and was a chapter officer and regional vice president of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Erick completed community service with PTK which included volunteering at a Thanksgiving soup kitchen and speaking throughout the state. While in the Addiction Studies Program, he helped run a toy drive for children for parents in treatment and collected and delivered toys.

1 p.m. Ceremony Student Speakers

Daniel Canavin (Ammerman Campus)

Dan is a Liberal Arts major from Port Jefferson and has a 4.0 GPA. He earned Dean’s List recognition for the past two semesters and served as President of Phi Theta Kappa’s Alpha Zeta Nu Chapter, Senator of the SGA and is a Get There from Here Scholar. He plans to transfer to Stony Brook University to study Biological and Biomedical Sciences. Dan’s goal is to work in a health-related profession.

Ailie Kinnier (Eastern Campus)

Ailie, a Liberal Arts English major from Wading River, has a 3.9 GPA and earned Dean’s List recognition for the past two semesters. Ailie served as a Peer Mentor, President of PTK’s Alpha Eta Psi Chapter and is a regular volunteer at the First Baptist Church Food Pantry. She plans to transfer to Purchase College to study English Language and Literature to prepare her for a career in editing and journalism.

Armando A. Escobar Castillo (Michael J. Grant Campus)

Armando is a January 2022 graduate with a cumulative GPA of 3.9.
Armando was the founder and president of the Global Connections Club, director of Student Organizations in the SGA, a Peer Mentor, Annual New York State Beach Cleanup Volunteer, Student Speaker at the Celebration of Diversity event, Student Participant at the Trunk or Treat Event, CSTEP Program, member, Student Orientation Leader, Campus Tour Guide, and member of the Psychology Club.
