Town of Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin and Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, together with the Hempstead Town Board, are encouraging fellow residents to support local businesses this holiday season by visiting their neighborhood downtowns and shopping local. As Small Business Saturday approaches, the officials stressed the importance of prioritizing local businesses over major chain retailers when shopping for the holiday season. The officials made the announcement in front of the beloved local business Jeannine’s Gifts in Rockville Centre.
“It is now more important than ever to support our local downtown businesses in every way possible; not only during the holiday season, but throughout the entire year,” stated Supervisor Clavin. “They are more than just businesses. They are our families, friends and neighbors who often give tirelessly to our communities and it is now time to give back to them.”
“Small business ownership is the backbone of our local communities and contributes significantly to America’s largest township,” added Councilman D’Esposito. “I am proud to highlight local businesses during the busiest shopping season of the year.”
Small Business Saturday falls on the last Saturday in November and was first observed in 2010 as a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday to encourage holiday shoppers to patronize local brick and mortar businesses. This year, the holiday is being observed on Saturday, November 28.
Councilman D’Esposito will be visiting 13 local business within his district to celebrate Small Business Saturday. What’s more, the Councilman noted the importance of social media on Small Business Saturday and encourages all residents to post about their shopping experience on social media platforms using the hashtag #SmallBusinessSaturday.

Hempstead Town has been at the forefront of supporting local businesses throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Through Federal CARES Act funding, Hempstead Town has supplied thousands of local businesses with necessary PPE Kits to reopen safely under COVID-19 precautionary guidelines. Each kit contains disposable masks, gloves, face shields, hand sanitizer, sanitary wipes, a contactless infrared digital thermometer and more.
