Celebrate The 250th Anniversary Of The American Revolution With A Reenactment By The 3rd NY Colonial Regiment

The Shelter Island History Museum and the Long Island History Hunt are teaming up to offer a unique colonial experience that brings the Revolutionary War to life on Long Island’s North Fork. Witness what life was like for soldiers fighting in the American Revolution, and take a selfie challenge for a chance to win great prizes.

Visit the Shelter Island History Museum on September 6th, 2025, and watch the 3rd NY Colonial Regiment reproduce the daily routine of Revolutionary War soldiers, wives, families, and camp followers. Regiment members dress in period clothing and drill with reproduction firelocks just as in 1775. During your visit, join the Long Island History Hunt, an online scavenger-hunt style contest that encourages participants to visit 12 unique historic sites across Long Island and complete “selfie challenges” by uploading photos for a chance to win prizes. Visitors who complete challenges at all 12 locations are eligible for the Grand Prize of $500 cash, an authentic colonial luncheon, family museum memberships, and more.

The reenactment takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Museum, 16 South Ferry Road, Shelter Island. Rain date is September 7th. Admission is free, but donations are greatly appreciated. Picnicking is encouraged. Pets and smoking are prohibited during the re-enactment event.

The Shelter Island History Museum collects and preserves artifacts, documents, and stories that tell Shelter Island’s unique history, offering exhibits, research opportunities, and educational programs to connect the community with its heritage. Visit shelterislandhistorymuseum.org to learn more.
