Ahead of Veterans Day, the Sachem Central School District Board of Education accepted a donation of 26 copies of “The Poppy Lady: Moina Belle Michael and Her Tribute to Veterans” at its Nov. 1 meeting. Board trustee and Navy veteran Michael J. Isernia, Esq., presented the books on behalf of the Military Business Resource Group of UL Solutions.

The book tells the story of the woman who devoted her life to ensuring the poppy flower became the symbol of honor and remembrance for veterans. The copies will be distributed to the district’s 10 elementary and three middle school libraries. Educators will use them as a resource to teach lessons about the importance of honoring and thanking veterans, as well as the debt of gratitude owed to them for their service.

Several members of the board of education and district were present to accept the donation including Board President Robert Scavo, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Christopher Pellettieri, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Erin Hynes, Director of Instructional Technology Jack Renda and three of the district’s librarians – Amelia Estevez-Creedon, Stacey Furey and Kelly Lavdas.
