Since the start of the school year, seventh grade French students in Kimberly Gallipoli’s class at James Wilson Young Middle School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District have been expanding their learning beyond the classroom by writing to pen pals in St. Gallen, Switzerland.
Each month, the students would send letters in regard to their unit’s current theme, speaking to topics such as personal identification, “my home,” “my family,” “my school life” and more. Their Swiss pen pals would respond shortly after.
Around the winter holidays, the students sent a package of goodies to Switzerland, including holiday cards and handwritten letters. Then, in March, the James Wilson Young students received an Easter package with beautifully decorated Easter cards and Swiss chocolates.
Students are preparing to send one more letter via Google before a final send off in June. Though, the students will have the option of keeping contact with their pen pals, if approved by their parent of guardian.
