Members of the Bayport-Blue Point community laced up their running shoes on Dec. 10 to participate in the school district’s inaugural BBP Community & Cocoa 5K Fun Run/Walk. The event was intended to foster community involvement, raise suicide awareness and support a charitable cause. Proceeds were distributed to organizations that provide prevention, post-suicide counseling, support and care to families.
Bayport-Blue Point residents patiently waited in cold temperatures for the BBP Community & Cocoa 5K Fun Rin/Walk to start.
The BBP Community & Cocoa 5K Fun Run/Walk was put together by the district’s Wellness Committee and with assistance from faculty and students who sit on the Superintendent’s Council. Sylvan Avenue Elementary School fourth grade student Jane E. created the T-Shirt design.

Although the run is over, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Timothy Hearney told the community that the district will continue talking about suicide intervention, prevention and awareness and stressed that the topic is an important one to the whole community.
“As a district, we continue to strive to educate all of our students, faculty and families to best ensure that each of us has a ‘go-to person’ within our schools,” Dr. Hearney said. “We define this person as someone they feel comfortable speaking with, confiding in, and finding support from, not only in difficult times, but in joy, as well.”

Bayport-Blue Point High School students Ella F. and Eva M. were first- and second- place winners, respectively, with Dr. Hearney crossing the finish line in third place. Each person who crossed the finish line was given a medal.
