Supervisor Don Clavin and members of the Hempstead Town Board gathered at Baldwin Park today with several local dog owners and their pets to announce the grand opening of a beautiful new dog park for residents of America’s largest township and their canine companions. Supervisor Clavin made the announcement along with Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilman Bruce Blakeman, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, Councilman Dennis Dunne, Sr., Councilman Tom Muscarella, Councilman Chris Carini, Town Clerk Kate Murray and Receiver of Taxes Jeanine Driscoll.
“Now more than ever, residents are looking for ways to get out of the house. Dogs, too, need a place where they can socialize, exercise and burn off excess energy,” stated Supervisor Clavin. “The Town of Hempstead is proud to announce the opening of the Baldwin Park dog park, a place where both people and canines can enjoy the outdoors and make new friends.”
The new dog park measures 60 feet by 110 feet and is divided into separate sections for small and large dogs. The surface is comprised of grass. The facility also features two dog water fountains, four benches and three dog waste containers – all of which were installed in-house by Town of Hempstead personnel.
This is the second dog park opened by the Town of Hempstead, following in the pawprints of a 14,025-square-foot facility at Newbridge Road Park in Bellmore. Supervisor Clavin also announced that a third dog park will open in Oceanside Park as early as next week, and plans are being drawn up for a fourth site in Levittown.
Dog owners who utilize the Baldwin park facility must remain on-site with their pets at all times. Visitors are also asked to be respectful of other dog owners and monitor if their dog appears nervous or aggressive around other dogs. What’s more, to help keep residents safe in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, all visitors to the dog park must wear masks and follow proper social distancing.
“Baldwin Park offers so much for the local community, and we are proud to add this dog park to make it even better for our residents,” said Senior Councilwoman Goosby. Added Councilman Blakeman, “This is a great day for Town of Hempstead dog owners and their pets.”
“This dog park is a great new facility for residents of America’s largest township, and I am also excited about the opening of our third site at Oceanside Park,” said Councilman D’Esposito. “Levittown residents have expressed great interest in adding a dog park to the community, and I thank Supervisor Clavin for making that wish a reality,” Councilman Dennis Dunne Sr. added.
“As a proud dog owner, I am very excited for the opening of the Baldwin dog park and other additional sites in the Town of Hempstead,” said Councilman Muscarella. Added Councilman Carini, “We encourage all Town of Hempstead dog owners to bring their four-legged friends down to this great new dog park at Baldwin Park.”
Baldwin Park is located at 3232 Grand Avenue in Baldwin. The park is also home to stunning baseball fields, basketball courts, playgrounds, a spray pool, a roller hockey rink and even a skate park.
