The Village of Amityville came together in a heartfelt tribute to one of its most dedicated public servants, as officials, first responders, family members, and residents gathered to rename Oldfield Avenue after former Fire Chief George M. Lang III.
The ceremony honored Lang’s extraordinary 58 years of service to the Amityville Fire Department, as well as his contributions as an instructor at the Suffolk County Fire Academy. Remembered as a mentor, leader, and devoted family man, Lang’s impact on the community was described as both profound and lasting.
Residents lined the street as the new sign bearing his name was unveiled, symbolizing a legacy rooted in service, sacrifice, and selflessness. Speakers reflected on Lang’s decades of dedication, noting that his influence extended far beyond emergency response—shaping generations of firefighters and strengthening the fabric of the community he served.
Among those in attendance was Babylon Town Councilman and Public Safety Chairman Terence McSweeney, who is also a firefighter. McSweeney emphasized the importance of honoring those who dedicate their lives to protecting others.
“It is truly an honor to stand alongside this community in remembering Ex-Chief George M. Lang III,” McSweeney said. “As a firefighter myself, I know the level of commitment and sacrifice this job demands. George embodied that spirit every single day for nearly six decades. This street renaming ensures his legacy will never be forgotten and will continue to inspire generations to come.”
Town officials echoed that sentiment, reaffirming their ongoing support for first responders and their families. The event served not only as a tribute to Lang’s life but also as a broader acknowledgment of the courage and dedication displayed by emergency personnel throughout the region.
The renaming of Oldfield Avenue stands as a permanent reminder of a life devoted to others. For many in attendance, it was more than a ceremony—it was a powerful moment of unity, gratitude, and remembrance.
As the crowd dispersed, one message remained clear: George M. Lang III’s legacy will endure in the community he loved, the department he served, and the lives he touched.
