Students at Abbey Lane Elementary School in the Levittown Public School District designed parade-style balloons in celebration of Thanksgiving and the annual parade in New York City.

Each students’ balloon based on their favorite character was represented in the halls.

Fourth graders read the book, “Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade” by Melissa Sweet, which follows the master puppeteer who invented the first balloons for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Students designed and created their own balloons based on their favorite characters.

The projects were created after reading “Balloons Over Broadway” and were displayed to mimic the annual parade.

Using their STEM skills, students brainstormed the best materials needed to make their balloon float. They also wrote descriptive writing pieces to describe their balloons, so guests could guess which writing piece belongs to which balloon when they visit the exhibit. Images of the balloons and the creative writing pieces were hung in the halls in a decorative fashion that mimics the balloons travelling down Broadway in New York City.
