During class, students at Washington Drive Primary School in the Harborfields Central School District read the Ashley Spires book “The Most Magnificent Thing,” which emphasizes perseverance and resilience, in addition to upcycling and repurposing goods that are no longer needed. Students then collected various recycled goods at home, brainstormed about what magnificent thing that they would want to make, and then created blueprints for their creations. Family members volunteered to join the students on Jan. 24 in the school’s cafetorium to assist in cutting, gluing, taping and creating the magnificent things.
Washington Drive Primary School students created their own “Most Magnificent Things” centered on helping animals.
Over the month leading up to this project, Washington Drive collected pet supplies for the Harborfields High School Pet Awareness Club, to be donated to local animal shelters, and the main character in the Spires story based her magnificent thing on her dog, so students were encouraged to create a magnificent thing centered around helping animals. Many students chose to create dog or cat shelters.
“Our students were truly engaged in building and creating, following the engineering and design process, while having a lot of fun,” teacher Kelly Harley said.
