Long Islanders Invited To Women & Alzheimer’s: The Empowerment Forum On November 1 Hosted By Alzheimer’s Foundation Of America

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) will host Women & Alzheimer’s: The Empowerment Forum on Wednesday, November 1, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Marriott Melville Long Island (1350 Walt Whitman Road, Melville). The free event, which takes place on the first day of National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month and is open to all, features panel discussions with female dementia care experts and family caregivers.  They will discuss Alzheimer’s disparate impact on women and empower attendees with knowledge to help them reduce their risk of developing Alzheimer’s, plan for long-term needs, and improve quality of life for themselves and their loved ones with Alzheimer’s. Individuals can register at www.alzfdn.org/womensforum2023.

Alzheimer’s disease impacts all races, genders and ethnicities but it disproportionately affects women. Women account for two-thirds of Americans living with Alzheimer’s and face a greater risk of developing a dementia-related illness, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Additionally, two-thirds of Alzheimer’s caregivers are women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“Women are more likely to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or serve as an Alzheimer’s family caregiver than men, which means Alzheimer’s is both a public health issue and a women’s issue,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s President & CEO. “Enabling women to learn from, and interact with, other women who understand and have navigated these challenges will empower them with helpful, practical knowledge that they can use themselves.”

The event is designed to help provide women with up-to-date, practical skills and information to live a higher quality of life and provide better care, as well as reduce risk through social change.  It will give them a better understanding of the increased risk to women, to prepare them for the caregiving journey and encourage them to speak up, address their concerns and have their questions answered. Guest speakers will include family and professional caregivers and medical and dementia care experts who will share their expertise. It also will have a focus on underserved communities and how they are impacted.

Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions of the panelists. Free memory screenings will also be available.
