For the 11th consecutive year, Harborfields High School’s girls varsity swim team hosted a Swim Across America event at Centerport Yacht Club. This year, 33 swimmers from Harborfields, Huntington, South Huntington and Elwood participated on Sept. 8 and raised $4,747 for cancer research, prevention and treatment.
Proceeds from the fundraiser will support immunotherapy research at the Swim Across America Laboratory at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, lung cancer clinical trials at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, pediatric brain cancer research at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research at North Shore University Hospital and pediatric oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Children's Cancer Hospital.
“It was a terrific afternoon watching our team raise funds for such an important cause,” said Robert Franco, the district’s director of health, physical education and athletics. “I am so proud of our coaches and athletes. What we do during competition matters, but the character we show outside of competition sets us apart.”
