Islip Town officials broke ground on the construction of a new turf field at Broadway Ave. Park in Sayville that will play host to athletes of 3 popular sports. The new turf field will be lined for men’s football, women’s and men’s lacrosse, and will replace the multi-purpose grass field built in 2014.
“It will be much easier for the leagues to play in all types of weather-related conditions, without having to worry about damaging the grass turf,” said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter. “The natural grass field is used on a regular basis throughout the year. With no down time in the practice and game schedule, field maintenance and growing grass is very difficult. The field is essentially used year-round, and the grass turf does not have time to recover from the wear and tear,” explained the Supervisor.
Attending the ground-breaking were athletes from the Sayville community; Sayville Youth Football President Dan Holahan; Sayville Youth Lacrosse President Steve Mercorella; Supervisor Angie Carpenter; Tom Owens, Commissioner DPW and Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs; Deputy Commissioner Deirdre Whalberg and Kara Welling, representing Councilman John M. Lorenzo.
